A JACK Russell cross was jumping for joy when it was a runner up in a national competition to find a canal loving canine to front a marketing campaign for a new charity.

Bailey was photographed at the canal in Berkhamsted close to where he lives with owner Carole Sims.

The picture taken while out on their daily walk came in the top four out of 1,000 photographs submitted to the competition.

Carole said: “We were delighted to get a runners up spot in this competition and get our dog a little fame.

“We all love going for our daily walks by the canal as it’s such a relaxing environment and one where we can all get some valuable exercise.”

The Canal & River Trust, which is launching later this year to care for and protect the nation’s waterways, set up the contest.

Chairman Tony Hales said: “We’re going through one of the biggest changes to the running of the waterways in many years so it’s important we bring to people’s attention how beneficial they are for local communities.”

Due to the popularity of the competition, a Facebook group has been set up to give people the chance to continue to share their pictures and favourite walking routes. www.facebook.com/groups/canalriverdogwalkers
