Students are learning how to fight fire as part their Duke of Edinburgh course.
So far, they have done exercises in how to use breathing apparatus, fire hoses, fire ladders and hydraulic cutting equipment to get trapped injured people out of cars.
The 14 youngsters from Ashlyns School in Chesham Road, Berkhamsted, had to learn a new skill as one of the tasks to get their bronze Duke of Edinburgh award.
They chose to complete 12 one-and-a-half-hour sessions by Red Watch at Hemel Hempstead Fire Station.
Teacher Sarah Sibeon, who organised the sessions with Dani Gohin, said: “They absolutely love it. The big focus is teamwork, as they never work alone – they’re always in pairs.
“In one exercise, they literally cut the roof off a real car as a team – in supervised conditions – to rescue a student ‘casualty’.”
Their passing out ceremony in front of their parents, family and friends will be at the Queensway station on Saturday, June 23.
