A RETIRED journalist who lived alone hanged himself after plunging into a ‘financial mess’, an inquest heard.

The dead body of James Hooley, 62, of Grove Road, Tring, was found hanging from a loft hatch in his study, on May 4 this year.

Hertfordshire coroner Edward Thomas told the inquest that Mr Hooley had left a note in which he said he was in a financial mess, and gave details of what he owned, including his house which he felt he could not afford.

The retired journalist - who for many years covered the Daily Mail schools rugby competitions – did not have a history of psychiatric illness.

Mr Hooley’s body was discovered by police officers after they were alerted by a neighbour.

Mr Thomas said that there was no medication found on the premises and no sign of any disturbance.

He added that Mr Hooley had suffered no injuries except those associated with hanging – specifically a wound on his neck which had been caused by the rope.

He recorded a verdict of respiratory failure due to suspension and told the inquest that Mr Hooley had intentionally taken his own life.
