AN MP has been branded ‘impotent’ for his response to gypsies who parked their caravans in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Little Gaddesden Parish Council chairman Douglas Adams said the site Valley View - between Hudnall Lane and Hemel Hempstead Road - could become “another Dale Farm”.

He spoke out at a meeting on Monday after writing to Mike Penning, who represents the Hemel Hempstead area, to ask for his help in moving the travellers on.

But Mr Adams said: “Our local MP is offering us absolutely no support on this.

“I just find that a bit worthless. What’s the job of an MP if not to get involved in local actions?

“Is he just a hand-shaker and a greeter or does he do anything for us?

“Following Dale Farm, there was a lot of talk by politicians saying they are never going to let this happen again.

“But now what are they going to do about this? The answer is nothing.”

Mr Penning’s response to the council had said there is little he can do, because MPs have no control over planning issues and Valley View is outside of Herts.

But councillor Omer Kutluoglu said: “He has a rather impotent view of it.”

There were 15 letters of objection after a planning application was submitted for four caravans at the site, which only has permission for one.

Two extra caravans have already moved onto the land.

The owner has now also asked Central Beds Council for a certificate of lawful development for the three caravans to be there.

A decision is expected to be made by Friday on whether they can stay at the site.
