THE man who found a first edition of Samuel Beckett’s first novel Murphy in a bundle of books given to Oxfam has spoken about the £12k find.
Geoff Smith, 64, who used to work for the British Library, has worked at Oxfam’s stores in Berkhamsted High Street for five years.
But he said: “We have had nothing of this rarity and value donated before.
“I knew as soon as I saw it that it might be important.”
A little internet research helped him realise just how rare the find was.
The book sold for £12,000 in an auction by Bonhams, as reported in the HeraldExpress last week.
