THE organisers of a charity fundraiser to support the restoration of the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal are appealing for people to sign up.

The Walk An Arm’s Length sponsored walk on Saturday, September 2 replaces this year’s cancelled canal festival, which means it is the charity’s biggest event and only opportunity to reap large amounts of cash.

So far more than 100 people have signed up do the 6.5 mile walk from Wendover to Bulbourn.

The charity would like 500 registered walkers to take part. With a £10 registration fee, it would bring in £5,000 before sponsorship money.

The aim is to raise £25,000 from the day, which promises to be highly enjoyable with boat trips at Bulbourne, stalls at the picnic area and a shuttle bus between the two destinations.

The money will help complete the ongoing restoration of the canal, which is being done entirely by volunteers.

The trust’s membership secretary Katherine Deaney said: “We always need more funds to buy essential material and hire equipment needed to restore the canal.

“£50 buys 5ft of special lining to make the restored canal watertight and £100 buys and installs 50 concrete blocks to protect the canal bed. £150 hires an excavator for a day, and we can’t do the job without them.”

Walkers who want to take part can pick up a leaflet and registration form from Wendover Community and Tourist Information Office in the Clock Tower, Wendover Library, Tring Tourist Information Centre, 99 Akeman Street and Tring Library.

There is also a Walk Hotline on 07547 181857 and more information at www.wendoverarmwalk.org.uk
