Those behind a threatened charity handyman scheme are hopeful it could still be saved.
Dacorum Age Concern has several fundraising events coming up and is in the process of making applications for grants.
Community fundraiser Michelle Law said: “We are really still optimistic that we are going to turn it around.”
The Gazette reported earlier this year that the not-for-profit scheme, which helps elderly folk with odd jobs around the home like changing light bulbs and putting up hand rails, is facing a cash crisis after government cutbacks.
“We have had some lovely little cheques in of £5 and £10 which has been so generous from a couple of people that have used the scheme and people that know handyman manager Doug Dews,” said Michelle.
The charity scheme, had to introduce charges – starting at £15 – for the first time two years ago to keep going.
As part of the bid to keep the much-needed service, two fundraising events are being put on.
Teams of four are invited to sign up to a golf day at Whipsnade on Thursday, September 13. It costs £60 per person and includes a three course dinner.
And on Thursday, October 18, the charity is hosting its first fire walk at Hemel Hempstead’s Riverside Shopping Centre.
