Fans running a website dedicated to all things Star Trek held a 24-hour podcast to raise charity cash.

Dad-of-one Wayne Emery, from Kings Langley, Paul Drinkwater, of Nash Mills, Hemel Hempstead, and Marc Stamper, who lives in Hampshire, took part in the fundraiser, raking in £1,011 for Watford General Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit and £401 for Amnesty International.

Married Wayne, 28, chose the hospital cause because medical staff there saved his newborn daughter when she came into the world not breathing in 2011. The podcast started at 8pm on Saturday, September 15.

Bus driver Wayne, who started watching the space drama when he was just seven, said: “I know it is a cliché but believe me when I say, everything I needed to know about life, I learned from Star Trek.”
