Different faiths will share their traditions during an Evening of Compassion.
The get-together is being hosted by the Dacorum Interfaith Network on Monday to launch the first stage of Hemel Hempstead becoming an official Compassionate Town.
People from all backgrounds and faiths are invited to attend from 7.30pm at the Hemel Hempstead Quaker Meeting House in The Alleys, St Mary’s Road, to learn more about the Charter of Compassion.
The aim is to get the community behind the initiative before approaching council chiefs for support.
Dacorum Interfaith Network trustee Paul Sandford said: “We are launching a grass roots level compassionate campaign. It is still quite new in the UK. Eventually we will approach the council officially to ask them to sign up.”
The international Charter of Compassion, founded in 2008, is an effort to restore compassionate thinking and action to the centre of religious, moral and political life.
Mr Sanford said: “People everywhere are fed up with religion being associated with violence. The principle of compassion lies at the heart of every religious tradition. We want to build compassion from an individual to a community level.”
