A pub landlady who celebrates her 85th birthday next Tuesday has lived above the village hub she runs for 80 years.

Barbara Green moved into the Green Dragon in Flaunden in 1932 when the pub was taken over by her parents Bob and Ida Burgess. Before that it was run by her grandparents.

Managers Karen Evans and Murray Rogers are planning a Frank Sinatra-themed party for Barbara, right, who enjoyed a career on the West End stage during her younger years.

Karen said: “She is very popular and very well respected.

“We tend to rally around her and look after her.”

Mum-of-three Barbara, who took over the business in 1975, still lives above the pub, which has a colourful history. The licensee was even playmates with Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret when they visited with a groom during a stay at nearby Latimer House before the Second World War. However, she was unaware of their royal connections at the time.
