A refurbishment of Berkhamsted’s religious landmarks could soon begin at a cost of up to £100,000.
Parishioners hope to transform the Rectory Lane Cemetery first by installing new benches, ornamental trees and information signs there.
Christopher Green is chairman of the buildings committee of High Street-based St Peter’s Church, which owns the site with Berkhamsted Town Council.
He said: “One obvious possibility would be to have some sort of trail that people could follow that would take them to the graves of important people buried there.”
These include First World War General Horace Smith-Dorrien.
Dr Green said the site receives ‘minimal attention’ at present and has many broken gravestones.
Parishioners are trying to set up a Friends of St Peter’s Church charitable trust to make it easier to gain funding for work needed at the church and its properties.
Dr Green said: “St Peter’s is a very important building and is part of the landscape of Berkhamsted.”
It is Berkhamsted’s oldest surviving building, dating back to the 1200s.
