The water supply to parts of a village has been disrupted after a mains was damaged during maintenance work.

Affinity Water says the problem will affect people who live in Darrs Lane, Northchurch, until its technician and repair team are able to restore regular supply.

Spokesman Kevin Barton said: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to customers in Darrs Lane, Berkhamstead, who may have experienced low pressure problems.

“The National Grid was carrying out essential maintenance work on one of their supply pipes when their technicians accidently snapped a water main that was close to the gas pipe.

“We would like to thank our customers for their patience.”

The company blamed a third-party contractor for the mistake in a statement published on its website earlier this afternoon.

It said: “During this time we ask you not to use any electrical appliances that require a water supply, like washing machines or dishwashers, and to conserve water from storage tanks during the time your water supply is interrupted.

“We aim to restore your supply to normal as soon as possible and apologise for the inconvenience caused.”

TUESDAY UPDATE:

The problem had been repaired by 7.50pm – 70 minutes before Affinity Water’s 9pm deadline.
