‘Badgers will not defeat us’

Gardeners at Ashridge House say they are doing their best to protect their lawns from attack by badgers.

The Gazette reported last week that badgers have torn up huge chunks of turf around the Grade I-listed historic mansion.

Head gardener Mick Thompson said: “It is difficult to do much. We replace the turf and roll it. Badgers are creatures of habit and will return.

“They are looking for worms, leatherjackets, chafer grubs and other insects they eat. They are protected animals under the Wildlife Act.

“One possible solution to consider, in line with what some other organisations do, is to spray insecticides to kill off chafer grubs to reduce the attraction to the badgers in certain areas.”
