Health chiefs: ‘Keep warm and you will keep well’

COUNTY council bosses want to emphasise the importance of keeping warm as the cold snap bites.

The cold can make medical conditions worse and those on low incomes or struggling to heat their homes are being offered extra support.

Dr Raymond Jankowski, deputy director of public health at NHS Hertfordshire, said: “Colder weather increases blood pressure and those already with heart and vascular disease are most at risk from developing a stroke or heart problem in cold conditions.

“Winter weather can also affect those with breathing problems like asthma as cold air makes it more difficult to breathe clearly.

“Keeping warm can help you keep well.”

Herts County Council runs schemes to give benefits advice, improve insulation, supply emergency heaters and help the homeless.
