After her mother died of cancer a Hemel Hempstead businesswoman decided to do all she could to raise funds for the charity that was so supportive.
Polly Harris Gorf, of Polehanger Lane, is one of a new, more local committee that has decided to revitalise the activities of the Macmillan Cancer Support.
“My mum, Kit Harris, died of cancer last August,” said Mrs Harris Gorf.
“It was very advanced and the Macmillan Cancer Nurses helped her come to terms with it and did practical things to help. I want to give something back.”
Mrs Harris Gorf said Macmillan was changing the way it organised its local groups, meaning that Hemel Hempstead could concentrate on the town.
Other groups are planned for Tring and Berkhamsted.
“The previous committee worked tirelessly and did a fantastic job,” said Mrs Harris Gorf.
“But now the changes mean we can concentrate on Hemel Hempstead, in the local community and with businesses and pubs.
“We will be on the doorsteps of the people of Hemel Hempstead.” The new five-strong committee has already begun to come up with ideas.
They include activities such as darts and tug-of-war leagues involving local pubs, taking part in local fetes.
Macmillan group members also want to encourage people to organise coffee mornings in September.
Macmillan in Hemel has launched a Facebook page www.facebook.com/MacmillanInHemelHempstead
The best ways to contact the group are via Facebook or attend a public meeting at The Crabtree pub, in Leverstock Green Road, Hemel Hempstead, from 6pm on Wednesday, May 1.
