A woman who nursed two priests in her own home as they were dying has been awarded Tring’s Annual Community Award.
Wendy Hinds, 69, first cared for Father Tony Potter from Corpus Christi Catholic Church, where she goes to mass, in 2001, and did the same for his successor.
Canon Vincent Berry, its current priest, said: “Her home is and always has been an open house to everyone, regardless of colour or creed. There are numerous stories about people who were down in their luck, homeless or who had just fallen on hard times.
“She would take them in from the street, give them food and sometimes a bed for the night. They were always treated as one of the family.”
She was given a bouquet of flowers by Tring Town Council at its annual meeting on Monday. The council will also give a £100 cheque to a charity of her choice.
