The firm behind a massive fire that raged for almost three months has entered into voluntary liquidation.

It leaves a question mark over what will happen to the site, run by Wood Recycling Services, in Appspond Lane, Potters Crouch.

The blaze started on November 10 at the wood and composting recycling base on the border of Hemel Hempstead and St Albans and finally burnt itself out on February 8.

Earlier concerns had been raised about the levels of waste on the site and the firm had been banned by environment chiefs from accepting anymore.

Following the fire, the Environment Agency stripped the company of its operating permits and ordered that the site be cleared.

A spokesman for the agency said: “The elimination of the obligation of the company by dissolution, does not determine the potential responsibilities of other parties for the pollution or contamination on the site.”
