Doing the ‘Dickinson Dash’ for paper mill boat

An intrepid team of boaters aim to recreate history as they set off on a canal dash to raise money for the Paper Trail at Apsley.

The team’s target sponsorship of £1,000 will go towards restoring the Bryan Donkin, a canal ferry boat used for trips at the Frogmore Paper Mill.

The idea for the challenge stems from the days when paper maker John Dickinson operated an overnight boat service from Apsley to warehouses in Paddington. The 35 mile trip passed through 23 locks and ensured products made that day were on sale in London the next morning.

Team member Keith Jones said: “It is going to be challenging as there is very little information we can find out about the dash. But we desperately need a new cover for the boat as it is a good source of income for the paper mill.”

The dash starts at 7am on Saturday, May 25 from Apsley.
