The Conservative Party has held its seat in the Watling by-election, following the departure of police and crime commissioner David Lloyd.

Hilary Jane Killen has been elected to the ward, which covers Great Gaddesden, Flamstead and Markyate, after securing 676 votes in Thursday’s poll.

The by-election was called after Mr Lloyd decided to step down in order to give more time to his county-wide commitments.

He was re-elected as the county council representative for the Bridgewater ward in the Herts-wide poll also held yesterday.

In Watling, the turnout was 29.19 per cent. UKIP received the second largest number of votes - 261, while Labour secured 183 and Liberal Democrats got 108 on their side.
