HOSPITAL bosses are urging people to think twice before going to A&E with conditions that can be treated elsewhere.

During the winter there is extra pressure on the NHS and A&E departments need to focus on patients needing emergency treatment.

Mr David Gaunt, clinical director for emergency services at West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “The A&E department is for people needing emergency care.

“We are here to treat very serious or life-threatening injuries or illnesses.

“Each day there continues to be a significant number of people who come with minor injuries or illnesses that should be treated elsewhere. We want to focus all our resources on those who genuinely need us.”

Always call 999 in a life-threatening situation.
