A suspected fraudster who tried to take thousands of pounds from an elderly woman’s bank account is being sought by police.

Officers investigating the crime want to speak to a woman who entered the Santander bank in Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead, and tried to transfer money from the account of a 76-year-old woman from Buckinghamshire. She used a fake bank card with the victim’s name, but left the bank in the direction of Market Square as staff made checks. Thankfully, the victim did not lose any money.

The incident happened more than 10 weeks ago, but police have only made a public appeal for information today.

PC Matt Cann from the town’s Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “This was a brazen attempt to take many thousands of pounds out of the victim’s account, but fortunately it was not successful.

“We believe the woman may have information that is vital to our investigation and we would like to trace her as a matter of priority. If this is you, or if you recognise this person, please get in touch as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information about the woman or the incident, which happened shortly before 11.45am on Tuesday, March 26, should call the police non-emergency number 101 with the crime reference D1/13/1265.
