Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning has expressed his delight at seeing work on the project he first campaigned for in 2008 finally get started.
Preparatory work to transform the Old Town into a one-way traffic system began on May 24 and the scheme took effect from Monday, using temporary traffic controls which will be replaced with the permanent road layout and signage in the summer.
Mr Penning said the change would allow for more ‘spontaneous’ parking spots in the High Street, which in turn could boost its potential as a shopping and dining destination.
He added: “To be able to pull up and pop in to the shops would be of great benefit to Hemel residents and the Old Town traders. It is one of the greatest assets we have and we don’t make the most of it.
“I am delighted that the road will be made one way creating a location which we can use for specialist markets, carnivals and fairs – exactly what the Old Town used to be.”
