A plan to build 48 sheltered flats for the elderly has been shot down by town councillors.

They said at a meeting of Berkhamsted Town Council’s planning committee that the homes, exclusively for the over-60s, were poorly designed and did not have enough parking spaces.

Councillor David Collins said: “I have some concerns about the missed opportunities here to do a good design job. It is a bit of a mish-mash, I think.”

Ellie Smith, speaking for developer Churchill Retirement Living, said the Berkhamsted High Street homes, near Stag Lane, would fill a major need in the area.

She said the firm has consulted with the public about what the homes – destined for a site allocated by Dacorum Borough Council to be changed from an employment to a residential area – should look like. Councillor Tom Ritchie said: “More than half of the people who said anything made reference to inadequate parking and this has been completely ignored.”

Councillors voted to object to the plans.
