It was a proud day for Holtsmere End Junior School as their Year 5 and 6 athletics team were crowned District Sports Dacorum champions.
A total of 18 Hemel Hempstead schools were invited to take part in a range of running events including the 80m sprint, 4 x 80m relay and longer distance individual races at the Jarman Park Athletics track.
The schools were split into three categories – big schools, medium schools and small schools; and each category competed for their own trophy and ranking. More than 300 children took part in the event.
Holtsmere End Year 6 pupil Sophie Clarke said: ‘Our students were very successful in all of their races and gained lots of valuable points for their school.
“The children performed to their maximum ability and were extremely supportive when their team-mates were racing.”
Deputy headteacher Paul Heskin added: “I was delighted that I could be there to watch the children win the big schools category at the athletics event.
“They all gave 100 per cent in each of their races. They have all been training hard and it is great when they get such good results.”
In other sporting news, Year 6 pupil Matthew Riley was victorious at the Hertfordshire Schools Diving Championships in the primary boys category.
A group of 25 Hertfordshire schools were represented at the event and trophies and medals were presented by Commonwealth Bronze medallist and 2008 Beijing Olympian Hayley Sage.
