A Hemel Hempstead church is gearing up to bring a holiday at home to 30 elderly people, many of whom live alone and have little chance to socialise, next week.
The community project run by St John’s Church aims to provide fun, friendship and company for the holiday-goers with a four-day ‘mini break’ at the Boxmoor church.
They will be picked up from their homes each morning and dropped back late afternoon, and in the meantime they can enjoy everything from easy-going keep fit classes, craft activities, film showings and even a mystery coach trip including an afternoon tea.
Organiser Jean Garner said: “This is the sixth year we have run the holiday at home, and it works very well. We feel it is very important because there are plenty of things for children, but not enough for elderly people living on their own. They value the fellowship and many have made good friends through it.”
