A mum and dad whose first born daughter survived just 19 short days hope people will back a fundraising effort on what would have been baby Lexi’s second birthday.
Danny Kerr and Sam Charles-Kerr are inviting people to leave birthday wishes to the little one, who did not survive due to complications at birth, on a dedicated web page and donate £2 to the children’s hospice that helped care for her.
So far the couple, who live in Berkhamsted, have raised around £15,000 for Keech Hospice Care in Lexi’s memory and their last fundraiser – a football fun day in the grounds of Hemel Hempstead’s Cavendish School last month – raised £2,432.
Dad Danny, who is also a trustee and board member of the charity, said: “For us it is a way of raising more money for Keech and a way for people to remember Lexi in a way that is a bit different.
“Not many people met Lexi but she seems to have touched a lot of people’s lives.
“Yes, it is just another charity – there are millions of charities – but this is our children’s hospice.”
The couple, who since their tragedy in 2011 have bravely gone on to become parents for a second time to little Caitlyne, came up with the online fundraising idea after people sent them birthday wishes and cards on Lexi’s first birthday.
“It was really nice because people were still thinking about her,” said Danny, who along with partner Sam has always been determined to celebrate Lexi’s short life.
The couple will be marking Lexi’s birthday on Monday with a family day out to Whipsnade Zoo.
Danny said: “We try to keep ourselves to ourselves on that day. It’s hard because it’s a day we expected to spend with her rather than without her.”
