Police will be carrying out extra road checks in named locations around Herts in a bid to tackle speeding drivers.
The county’s road policing unit has highlighted areas where there have been a number of speed-related collisions, as part of a wider safety campaign run with Herts County Council.
The campaign – named Don’t Be A Dummy – will feature motorists wearing a crash test dummy mask and being warned about the speed checks and the dangers of irresponsible driving.
The A4146 Leighton Buzzard Road in Hemel Hempstead is one of the stretches where the team will be setting up throughout October and November. The full list of areas being checked has been published so that drivers have no excuse for speeding.
Insp Phil Bloor said: “Our aim is not to catch motorists out but to encourage them to slow down in these accident hotspots and educate them about the dangers of driving too fast.
“Excessive speed dramatically increases your chances of being involved in an accident. And the higher the speed, the more likely it is that it will be a serious collision where you or someone else is hurt or killed.
“Our message is don’t be a dummy – don’t get caught speeding this autumn.”
Police and crime commissioner David Lloyd backs the plans. He said: “People want to know that their roads are safe and that police are taking positive action against irresponsible drivers.”
Motorists caught speeding for the first time will be offered the chance to go on a speed awareness course run by the county council. Drivers who repeat offenders face points on their licence and a fine of up to £2,500 following court proceedings.
