Commuters are facing gridlock across Dacorum this morning with an overturned lorry causing lengthy closures on the M1.

Police were called at 5.53am to reports of the heavy goods vehicle which had overturned on the M1 northbound, just north of Junction 8 for Hemel Hempstead.

The driver was not injured.

The carriageway between Junctions and 8 and 9 has been closed as recovery takes place.

As of 8am this morning there was no access from the M25 Junction 21 clockwise and anti-clockwise at Junction 6a for the M1 northbound.

Traffic was being diverted off at Junction 8 towards Hemel Hempstead and the closures are expected to remain in place until around 10am.

Beds, Cambs and Herts Road Police have reported that only the A1M north junction 6 to junction 7 hard shoulder is running past the scene.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.

The closures have been affecting traffic levels throughout Hemel Hempstead.

UPDATE:

Lanes 3 and 4 are now running as of 9.30am.

Lanes 1 and 2 remain closed and the Highways Agency has reported there may be some damage or debris on the road which needs repair or removal.
