A Hemel Hempstead care home which recently cleaned up its act after being ordered to improve is celebrating two forthcoming renovation projects in the run-up to Christmas.

Mountbatten Lodge in Old Crabtree Lane will welcome a brand new garden designed by a youth group from Adeyfield Adventure Playground, which will also carry out the regeneration work itself.

The playground’s deputy manager Danny Taber said: “This is a great project which will not only be helping to bring some happiness to the lives of others but will help promote the youth club and the playground, and also raise the profile of the children in the community.”

A group of eight children from the playground’s youth forum have spent hours of their own time planning and designing the new garden, and even secured £500 of funding from the locality budget of Herts County councillor Anthony McKay.

The care home – which was failed on seven national standards by health watchdog the Care Quality Commission before shaping up its care earlier this year – also aims to open its new ‘Aunty Peg’s Shop’ renovated cafe in the style of an old-fashioned sweet shop, thanks to funding from two relatives of previous residents and Quantum Care.

Both projects are expected to be formally opened in December.
