Elderly and disabled users of a Herts-wide meals on wheels scheme were surprised to see their own county councillors doing the rounds last week.

Members and officers of the county council accompanied Hertfordshire Community Meals volunteers during their deliveries to see the difference the not-for-profit scheme can make to those in need.

Herts’ cabinet member for adult care and health Colette Wyatt-Lowe, who represents the Hemel Hempstead North East division and also the Woodhall Farm ward on Dacorum Borough Council, said: “It was great to see the work the meal service deliverers do every day to provide meals on wheels for sick, disabled, elderly and vulnerable adults in Herts.”

Sara Bedford who represents the Abbots Langley division at Herts County Council also took part, along with other councillors and officers.

The charity, which has an office in Hemel Hempstead, was set up in 2007 and was shortlisted for a National Business Award this year.

Chief executive Sarah Wren said: “We are really grateful to everyone who joined us to visit our clients. If anyone would like to volunteer as a regular befriender, we would be delighted to hear from you.”
