A section of Hemel Hempstead’s iconic Nickey Line pathway will be closed for most of January as a series of improvements are carried out.
Work will take place on the section of pathway between Redbourn Road and Eastman Way in Hemel Hempstead for four weeks, closing the road from January 6 to 31.
Dacorum Borough Council has commissioned the replacing and improvement of drains, laying of new tarmac on the path and the removal and treatment of several Japanese Knotweed plants.
A signed diversion will be in place throughout the duration of the works.
To make sure the prolific plant doesn’t continue to grow, a large area around the identified Japanese Knotweed will be excavated to a depth of around three metres.
The contaminated earth will be sent to a special landfill and a copper shield will be inserted to stop it growing again, before the area is filled in and restored.
The work will be carried out by construction contractor Durkan Ltd on behalf of the council.
Allowing Japanese Knotweed to grow is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
If you are concerned or think you may have one of the harmful plants on or near your property, call the trees and woodlands department at Dacorum Borough Council by calling 01442 228000.
