‘Don’t be scared to appeal ticket’

A motorist is imploring others who have fallen foul of the parking restrictions in a sports centre car park appeal their case.

Ben Collier, of Apsley, was slapped with a £150 parking fine after he failed to enter his car registration number at the reception of Hemel Hempstead Sportspace while he used the gym.

He said: “I went in, went for my swim, came out and went on my way, and then I got the fine for £150.”

Ben, who lives with his wife and twin daughters, appealed his case with the help of regulatory body Parking On Private Land Appeals – also known as POPLA.

The final ruling said that POPLA had decided the £150 wasn’t justified for the supposed offence committed – according to legislation from the British Parking Association – and Ben didn’t have to pay a penny. He’s now spreading the word to others, in case they don’t know about the free appeals service. He said: “I think it’s a horrible, sneaky system. I did what I thought was right.”

Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning has supported a review of the system since it was implemented last summer. He said: “The number of cases I’ve heard about has decreased recently, but if anyone has made a genuine mistake and needs help with an appeal, then I will do my level best to help them.” For more information, visit www.popla.org.uk.
