FOUR fire engines were called to a double-decker bus spewing smoke at the side of the M1 motorway.
The bus, carrying around 30 school pupils and believed to have been returning from a school trip, was heading north when it was forced to stop between Junctions 9 and 10 at 4.27pm yesterday (Wednesday).
The students evacuated the bus and waited by the side of the M1. Despite concerns that the smoke was caused by an engine fire, crews called to scene discovered it was a technical malfunction.
