A BAN on using hosepipes will come into force on Thursday.

The move by water companies covering Dacorum follows months of low rainfall, making the last two years the driest period since 1900.

Veolia Central Water, which supplies Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted, and Tring suppliers Thames Water are among the companies introducing the measures.

The hosepipe ban includes watering a garden or plants, cleaning vehicles, filling a domestic swimming or paddling pool, drawing water for domestic recreational use, filling a domestic pond, cleaning walls or windows, paths and patios.

However, a hosepipe can still be used by those with a valid Blue Badge or by those who are too frail or have a disability preventing them from using a water can, if the register with the water company.

Those caught breaching the ban could be prosecuted and face a fine of up to £1,000.
