A BUSINESSMAN who helped oversee the transformation of British industry in the 1980s has died at the age of 86.

Victor Grellier Paige CBE, of Benningfield Gardens in Berkhamsted’s Castle Village for the retired, was chairman of the Port of London Authority (PLA) from 1980 to 1985.

He led the restructuring of London Docklands, which included the closure of the West India, Millwall and the Royal Docks without an industrial dispute.

Victor, whose dad was a Millwall docker, helped turn the PLA from a loss-making to a profitable organisation and began the development of London’s City Airport.

The former Frithsden villager was a Potten End parish councillor from 1990 to 1998.

See this week’s Berkhamsted & Tring Gazette for the full tribute.
