PLANS to turn the top three floors of an antiques emporium into three flats are still on the table.

Berkhamsted High Street-based Home & Colonial was originally given planning permission for the work in 2009.

But the three-year time limit in which the work should have been done under the initial permission is now about to expire.

The Grade II-listed antiques shop has applied for the limit to be extended, and the move was supported by Berkhamsted Town Council’s planning committee at a meeting on Monday.

Committee chairman Laurence Handy later said: “At the end of the day you are in a situation where the preservation of the building is absolutely critical.

“But people are legally allowed to apply for a change of use to it.”

The plans include the conversion of popular third-floor The Attic Cafe, which offers diners views across Berkhamsted.
