AN AFFORDABLE homes plan previously described by town leaders as “like the Somme on a bad day” is now much better, they say.
Councillors gave their support to an Aldwyck Housing Group plan to build 20 flats and six houses during a meeting on Monday.
They had previously objected to it, saying that the homes looked like “dark, Satanic mills”.
But after meeting group representatives, council leaders say the plans are much more visually appealing – due to shorter front gardens, fake chimneys, glass-fronted stairwells and different-sized roofs.
Chairman Laurence Handy said: “It may not be 100 per cent perfect, but we can only push this so far and I think we have pushed this far enough.”
The homes are due to be built in Farm Place off Durrants Lane, Berkhamsted, if they receive the final go ahead from Dacorum Borough Council.
