A VOLUNTEER has been awarded two awards in quick succession for her work with victims of domestic abuse.
Cathy McArevey was praised for helping people who have suffered at the hands of domestic violence by both the Herts Police Authority (HPA) and the Herts Chamber of Commerce.
She has also raised almost £120,000 for a number of domestic violence charities in the county over the last 12 months.
Herts Chamber of Commerce awarded Cathy the Community Champion Award at the Inspiring Hertfordshire Awards ceremony.
And less than a week later Cathy was awarded the Community Safety Citizen Award at the HPA Safer Neighbourhoods Awards.
The 33-year-old who lives in Adeyfield, Hemel Hempstead, has spent the last two years volunteering her time with a number of related causes since a car accident forced her to take a break from her job as a nurse.
Her time is divided between being the chair of the Herts Domestic Violence Helpline, coordinating Community Action Dacorum’s domestic violence forum and working with Dacorum Women’s Aid. The helpline also won a High Sheriff Award for its work.
Cathy also spends time providing emotional support for charity Sova.
She said: “I’m delighted and very surprised. It’s an honour to be recognised.
“A very wide range of people are affected by domestic abuse or violence regularly, and the charities I work with including the helpline have had their funding cut dramatically.”
