DESPITE the rain crowds turned out and dug deep for good causes at a summer fete hosted by St Mary’s Church.

The annual event, which was organised by Reverend Jonathan Gordon and his wife Rachel, raked in £2,400.

Half of the cash will be ploughed back into the church while the rest will go to international charities that are supported by the congregation.

To help pull in the pounds during the Northchurch event, Rev Gordon braved getting splatted in the face with wet sponges.

There were pony rides for youngsters provided by Carol Buchorski from the village’s Two Oaks Pony Sanctuary and a crown making competition was held for youngsters from St Mary’s First School.

Nick Laing, a member of the congregation, said: “Because of the weather it wasn’t as busy but people were more generous. It was lots of fun.”
