THE appointment of an ‘Independent Person’ to hold politicians in Dacorum to account has been deferred after questions were raised about the candidate.
A full meeting of Dacorum Borough Council was due to appoint Joe Norton to the role last night.
But after the Liberal Democrat opposition produced copies of letters Mr Norton had sent to the Gazette, councillors decided to review the situation.
Council leader Andrew Williams said: “In light of the concerns that have been tabled and to give group leaders time to debate the issues raised, I recommend deferring the appointment of the Independent Person.
“Whilst I am not saying the nomination is inappropriate, in light of the comments made it would be appropriate for officers to give consideration to the issues raised.”
The appointment will be deferred for three months to give political group leaders time to discuss the situation and refer the nomination back to the appointment panel if necessary.
The Independent Person helps deal with complaints about councillors at the borough council and those on town and parish councils.
The role is unsalaried but expenses are paid, and involves around half a day’s work each month.
