Ride a bike in battle against knife crime

PEOPLE are being tasked to get in the saddle and embrace pedal power for an hour in memory of murder victim Billy Dove.

Hemel Hempstead Halfords store manager Nick Barron will set up five bikes in the town centre on Saturday and hopes to get enough riders on-board to keep the pedals going around from 10am to 5pm.

He’s urging participants to raise as much sponsorship as they can. The money raised will go to the Kiyan Prince Foundation – a charity that aims to fight knife crime and was set up by the father of a London schoolboy who was stabbed to death.

Nick – also a father – came up with the fundraiser because many of his work colleagues knew Billy. The 21-year-old, from Hemel Hempstead, died when he was stabbed in November last year. His teenage murderer was this month jailed for a minimum of 14 years.

Nick said: “I didn’t know Billy but I thought it was something worth doing. It is to raise money but it is also to not forget what happened.”

During the fundraiser there will be street collections and home-made cakes on sale. To sign up call Nick at Halfords on 01442 246388.
