Householders are being reminded that Christmas cards should not be put in green wheelie bins or paper recycling boxes, as these will contaminate the load.
Instead, cards can be dropped off at one of many shops that are running recycling schemes during January.
To stop contaminated waste from making it to recycling facilities, bin collectors have been told not to empty bins that they can see contain the wrong waste.
Things that can go into green bins include food waste, compostable bags, garden waste and natural cardboard.
Items that can go into paper recycling boxes are newspapers, magazines, leaflets, telephone directories, white envelopes and shredded paper.
