A proposal to move Hemel Hempstead’s town centre bus station has been given the green light.
Dacorum Borough Council’s cabinet has approved in principle a new bus interchange in Marlowes and Bridge Street.
It has been drawn up in partnership with Arriva and Herts County Council and will replace the current bus station in Waterhouse Street under a £2.2 million project.
The new location – expected to be complete by September next year – will be more convenient for passengers and should bring a boost to nearby town centre businesses.
Under the plans, the taxi rank in Marlowes will be moved to Waterhouse Street to help ease congestion. Under larger regeneration plans the existing bus station and Market Square will form a ‘leisure anchor’ with hopes of attracting family restaurants and a multi-screen cinema.
