A bid to transform the site of a 12-week blaze into a biomass development to generate electricity fuelled by wood chips are being considered by the Environment Agency.
Although Herts County Council has already given plans for the site in Appspond Lane, Potters Crouch - on the border of Hemel Hempstead and St Albans - the green light, it is down to the Environment Agency to grant a permit for the work.
The agency stripped previous site operators Wood Recycling Services Ltd, which went into voluntary liquidation last year, of its operating licences after a fire broke out back in November 2012. They had already been banned from accepting any more waste by the government agency and told to reduce the amount stored on the site amid safety fears.
The landowner is currently clearing the giant mounds of wood, which can be seen from the M1. Around 25 per cent has so far been removed but there have been delays.
A consultation on the biomass proposal submitted by Navitas Environmental Limited closed on Friday and it is expected that the Envionment Agency will make a decision in around six weeks time.
